Compartmentation is the practice of dividing a building into separate fire-resistant sections to contain fire and smoke. These sections (or “compartments”) give people more time to escape and help the fire service control the spread.
Fire-resisting elements typically include:
• Walls, floors and ceilings
• Fire doors
• Fire-stopped service penetrations (e.g. pipes, ducts, cables)
• Cavity barriers and fire-stopping materials
If these barriers are damaged, missing, or incorrectly installed, fire can spread rapidly, putting lives and property at serious risk.
