Spring is the perfect time for a reset. As we open windows, clear out clutter and enjoy lighter evenings, it’s also a great opportunity to check that your home or workplace is fire safe.

At Ezra Safety Group, our goal is simple, to help keep people safe. Here are some practical fire safety tips to include in your spring routine.

Clear Escape Routes

Spring cleaning is the ideal time to make sure escape routes are clear.

Check that:

Hallways, stairs and exits are free from clutter

Furniture or storage is not blocking doorways

External exits can be opened easily

A clear escape route can make all the difference in an emergency.

Check Your Alarms

Smoke alarms are your early warning system.

Take a moment to:

Test alarms weekly

Replace batteries if needed

Make sure alarms are installed in the correct locations

For kitchens, heat alarms are recommended rather than smoke alarms.

Be Mindful in the Kitchen

Cooking remains one of the leading causes of fires in the home.

Remember:

Never leave cooking unattended

Take care when cooking with oils and fats

Never add water to hot oil

If you’re cooking with children during the school holidays, keep them supervised and away from hot surfaces.

Electrical Safety Check

Faulty electrics are a common cause of fires.

As part of your spring reset:

Check plugs and cables for damage

Avoid overloading sockets

Unplug appliances when not in use

Fire Doors and Internal Protection

If your property has fire doors, make sure they are:

Kept closed when not in use

Not wedged open

In good condition

Fire doors play a vital role in slowing the spread of fire and smoke.

Outdoor Cooking Safety

As the weather improves, many of us start thinking about outdoor cooking, from barbecues to patio heaters.

It’s important to enjoy these safely:

Always place barbecues on a flat, stable surface away from buildings, fences and sheds

Never use a barbecue indoors or in enclosed spaces

Keep a bucket of water, sand or a hose nearby in case of emergency

Avoid using accelerants such as petrol or paraffin

Make sure barbecues are fully extinguished and cooled before leaving them unattended

If you’re using a gas barbecue, check hoses and connections for leaks before use.

Outdoor cooking is a great way to enjoy spring and summer, just make sure safety comes first.

Outdoor Spring Cleaning and Fire Safety

Spring cleaning often extends outdoors, clearing gardens, sheds and communal areas.

This is a great opportunity to improve fire safety:

Remove rubbish, dry leaves and debris from around buildings

Keep access routes and exits clear, especially in shared or communal areas

Store flammable materials, fuels and gas cylinders safely and away from ignition sources

Avoid blocking external escape routes with bins, furniture or garden equipment

For businesses and residential blocks, good housekeeping outside is just as important as inside when it comes to fire safety.

Final Thoughts

Spring is all about fresh starts, and fire safety should be part of that, both inside and outside your property.

Taking a few simple steps now can help protect your home, your workplace and the people around you.

If you need support with fire safety, from Fire Risk Assessments to Fire Training, our friendly team is always here to help.

Easter is a time for family, food and fun; at Ezra Safety Group, we are big fans. We proudly admit to being chocoholics, enthusiastic hot cross bun lovers, and firm supporters of the Preston tradition of rolling eggs down the hills at Avenham Park. If there’s chocolate involved, we’re all ears… and eggs.

With all that excitement, Easter can also bring busier kitchens, more cooking and a few extra fire risks. A little extra awareness can help ensure the only thing getting toasted this Easter is your hot cross bun, not the kitchen.

Hot cross buns and Easter cooking

Hot cross buns are an Easter favourite, but they do need a bit of extra care.

Heavily fruited buns are best toasted under the grill rather than in a toaster. Sugar and dried fruit can fall into toasters, increasing the risk of overheating or fire. Always keep grills and ovens under supervision, especially during busy family mornings or when multiple dishes are being prepared at once.

Other simple kitchen reminders include keeping tea towels, packaging, and decorations away from heat sources and never leaving cooking unattended, even for a short time.

Cooking with children this Easter

Easter baking and cooking is a lovely way to spend time together, especially during the school holidays. Getting children involved can be great fun, but busy kitchens need a little extra planning.

Simple tips for cooking safely with children include:

Keeping children well away from hot ovens, grills, and hobs

Turning saucepan handles inwards to prevent them being knocked or pulled

Supervising closely when using electrical appliances such as mixers or kettles

Giving children age appropriate tasks, such as mixing, weighing, or decorating

Keeping trailing leads, tea towels, and packaging well away from heat sources

Cooking together should be egg-citing for the right reasons, creating happy memories rather than hazards.

Candles, decorations and Easter displays

Candles and decorations can add to the Easter atmosphere, but they should always be used with care. Keep candles away from flammable materials, never leave them unattended, and consider safer alternatives such as LED candles, especially where children are present.

Matches and lighters should always be stored safely out of reach of children, and decorations should never be placed near heat sources.

A cracking Easter reminder

Easter is about enjoying time together, sharing food, and taking part in local traditions. With a few simple fire safety checks, you can focus on the fun and keep celebrations running smoothly.

From all of us at Ezra Safety Group, we hope you have an egg-stra special Easter filled with chocolate, laughter, and safe, happy memories.

At Ezra Safety Group, our goal is simple, to help keep people safe.

While much of our work focuses on workplaces, fire safety at home is just as important. By taking a few simple precautions, you can protect yourself, your family, and your property from the devastating effects of fire.

Facts About Fires in the Home

Fires in the home are more common than many people realise and often start from everyday activities.

Most house fires start in the kitchen, often because cooking is left unattended.

Faulty electrics cause around 6,000 fires in UK homes every year.

Every six days, someone dies in a house fire started by a cigarette.

These are stark reminders that fire risk is something we should all take seriously, even in our own homes.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Working smoke alarms are your first line of defence.

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially in hallways and landings. Do not install smoke alarms in kitchens or bathrooms, where steam can trigger false alarms.

Test your alarms every week and replace batteries as soon as needed.

A working smoke alarm can give you the early warning needed to escape safely.

Be Careful in the Kitchen

Cooking is the most common cause of house fires, so extra care is essential.

Never leave cooking unattended. Take extra care when cooking with oil or fat, and never add water to hot oil because this can cause a dangerous fireball.

Keep young children away from cooking areas where possible.

A heat alarm is usually more suitable for the kitchen than a smoke alarm.

Check Your Electrical Safety

Electrical faults are a major cause of fires, but they are often preventable.

Avoid overloading plug sockets. Regularly check plugs, sockets, and cables for signs of damage. Replace or repair faulty electrical items and be cautious when using extension leads.

Take Care with Open Flames

Open flames can quickly lead to fire if left unattended.

Never leave candles burning unattended and keep them away from curtains and other flammable materials.

Ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and avoid smoking when tired or in bed.

Plan Your Escape

In the event of a fire, having a plan can save lives.

Create a simple escape plan for your home and make sure everyone in the household knows it. Keep escape routes clear at all times and choose a safe meeting point outside.

Practising your plan, especially with children, can make all the difference in an emergency.

A Quick Home Fire Safety Checklist

Check that your smoke alarms are installed and working.

Make sure escape routes are clear.

Check that plug sockets are not overloaded.

Use candles and cooking equipment safely.

Make sure your family knows what to do if a fire starts.

Final Thoughts

Fire safety at home does not need to be complicated. Small actions can make a huge difference.

Taking a few minutes to check your home today could help protect what matters most tomorrow.

If you would like support with fire safety in your workplace, our team is always happy to help.

Online fire safety training is especially useful for new employees joining your organisation in between annual training sessions. Instead of waiting months for the next live or classroom course, new starters can complete essential training as part of their induction, helping them feel prepared from day one.

It also supports refresher learning for existing staff, reinforcing important fire safety messages throughout the year.

Accredited Courses, Certificates Included

All of our online courses are accredited and provide learners with a certificate upon successful completion. This can be used by employers as evidence of training, supporting your internal records and competence management.

Flexible Learning That Fits Around Your Working Day

We know it is not always easy to release staff for long training sessions. That is why our online courses are designed to be flexible and easy to complete around existing workloads.

Key benefits include:

This is an excellent solution for busy teams, multi site organisations, shift workers, and care environments where time away from duties can be difficult.

Subscription Options for Cost Effective Training

If you have multiple employees who need to complete several online courses, it may be more cost effective to purchase an annual subscription. This provides unlimited access to a wide range of training courses and can be a great way to manage training needs across your organisation.

Valentine’s Day is all about romance—candlelit dinners, cosy nights in, and delicious home-cooked meals. But while you’re setting the mood, don’t forget about fire safety! A little awareness goes a long way in preventing fire risks and keeping your celebration worry-free. Follow these simple tips to keep your Valentine’s Day both safe and romantic.

Keep flammable items away from fires and heaters

There’s nothing like a warm fire or heater to create a cosy atmosphere, but make sure nothing flammable is nearby. Keep blankets, curtains, and decorations at a safe distance to prevent any accidental fires.

Never leave fires or heaters unattended

If you have an open fire or are using portable heaters, always turn them off before leaving the room or going to bed. Unattended heat sources can quickly become dangerous, so stay mindful of their use.

Candlelight magic—with caution

Who doesn’t love the soft glow of candlelight? Consider using battery-powered candles for a worry-free ambiance. If you prefer the real thing, always place candles on a stable surface, away from anything flammable, and never leave them unattended.

Cooking up romance? Stay safe in the kitchen

We’re all foodies here at Ezra Safety Group, and we love cooking a delicious meal! But fire safety is sexy too—so make sure you don’t leave anything flammable near the hob. And if your romantic evening takes an unexpected turn, don’t leave cooking unattended!

Final safety check for a worry-free night

Before you relax into your evening, do a final check—extinguish all candles, turn off portable heaters, and ensure your cooking appliances are off. These small steps can help prevent fire hazards and let you enjoy your night with complete peace of mind.

By staying alert and following these fire safety tips, you can keep the romance alive without any unexpected emergencies. Wishing you a safe and love-filled Valentine’s Day from all of us at Ezra Safety Group!

Pancake Day is almost here! On 17th February, many of us will be reaching for the frying pan to whip up some delicious pancakes. Whether you prefer the classic lemon and sugar combination or go all out with chocolate spread and fruit, one thing is certain – safety should always come first in the kitchen.

Most house fires start in the kitchen, so it’s essential to take extra care when cooking. Follow these simple Pancake Day safety tips to ensure your flipping fun doesn’t turn into a fire hazard.

Never Leave the Hob Unattended

It’s easy to get distracted while cooking, but leaving a hot pan unattended is a serious fire risk. If you need to step away, even for a moment, turn off the hob. A quick reaction can prevent a dangerous situation.

Supervise Children in the Kitchen

Getting the kids involved in making pancakes is a fantastic way to celebrate, but always supervise them closely. Teach them that hot surfaces remain hot even after being switched off and ensure they keep a safe distance from the stove.

Keep Flammable Items Away from the Hob

Tea towels, kitchen roll, and even loose clothing can catch fire easily. Keep anything flammable well away from the cooking area.

Use the Right Pan and Oil

Make sure you’re using a suitable frying pan and avoid overfilling it with oil. If oil starts smoking, turn off the heat immediately and let it cool down before continuing.

Have a Plan in Case of Fire

If a pan catches fire, never throw water on it – this can cause flames to spread. Instead, turn off the heat and cover the pan with a damp cloth or fire blanket. If the fire gets out of control, get out, stay out, and call 999.

By following these simple precautions, you can enjoy Pancake Day safely and without stress. So, what’s your favourite pancake topping?

Let us know on our social media – we’d love to hear your delicious ideas!

If you own or manage residential properties, including small blocks of flats or HMOs, you have a legal duty to ensure the fire safety of your premises under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations. Additionally, guidance from the Home Office Guide for Small Blocks of Flats 2024 and LACORS outlines best practices for fire safety. Your responsibilities include:

Conducting a Fire Risk Assessment (FRA): Identify fire hazards within communal areas, including stairwells, corridors and bin storage areas and implement measures to mitigate risks.

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems: Install and maintain appropriate fire detection and alarm systems in common areas and, where necessary, within individual flats. Your Fire Risk Assessment will confirm the appropriate strategy and alarm requirements for your property.

Emergency Lighting: For blocks with enclosed communal stairwells, emergency lighting should be installed and maintained to ensure visibility in the event of a fire.

Escape Route Management: Keeping escape routes clear of obstructions and combustible materials is essential. Items such as bicycles, prams, or furniture should not be stored in communal areas.

Providing Fire Safety Information to Residents: Supply clear instructions on fire prevention, evacuation procedures, and the importance of maintaining fire safety measures within their flats.

Vulnerable Residents and Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs): Landlords must assess whether vulnerable residents (e.g., disabled or elderly individuals) need a tailored evacuation plan and provide suitable provisions where necessary.

Regularly Reviewing Fire Safety Measures: Update the FRA and safety protocols annually or when significant changes occur within the building.

Carry Out a Fire Risk Assessment – A legally required assessment to identify fire hazards, assess the level of risk, and implement necessary measures to protect residents. This includes checking communal areas, escape routes, fire doors, and fire detection systems. The FRA should be reviewed annually or whenever there are significant changes to the building or occupancy.

Ensure Fire Doors and Escape Routes Are Maintained – Fire doors must be self-closing, well-fitted, and undamaged to provide proper fire compartmentation. Escape routes, including stairwells and corridors, must remain free from obstructions, properly lit, and clearly signposted to ensure residents can exit safely in an emergency.

Provide Fire Safety Information to Residents – Residents must be informed about the fire evacuation strategy (whether ‘stay put’ or full evacuation), the location of fire exits, and general fire safety precautions. This should be communicated through fire safety notices in communal areas, tenant handbooks, or regular safety briefings.

Regularly Review Your Fire Safety Measures – Fire safety requirements evolve and building use may change. Regular reviews ensure that fire safety systems, such as alarms, emergency lighting, and extinguishers, remain in working order. Conducting routine inspections and servicing all fire safety equipment is essential to maintaining compliance and protecting lives.

Use a Reputable, Third-Party Accredited Company – Partnering with a trusted fire safety expert like Ezra Safety Group ensures compliance with legal requirements and best practices. Our accredited assessors provide thorough, professional Fire Risk Assessment, Fire Door inspection and ongoing support to help you meet your responsibilities and safeguard residents.

Winter Driving Safety: Stay Safe on the Roads This Winter

As temperatures drop and weather conditions become more unpredictable, winter driving can present additional risks for all road users. Snow, ice, heavy rain and reduced daylight hours can affect visibility, traction, stopping distances and vehicle performance. With a few simple checks and sensible preparation, you can help keep yourself and others safe on the road this winter.

At Ezra Safety Group, we encourage our Fire Risk Assessors and clients to plan ahead, drive responsibly and be prepared for changing conditions. Our assessors are driving throughout the UK, from Preston and throughout Lancashire and the North West, to Cumbria, Yorkshire and beyond and we know how important it is to be prepared for every eventuality when driving, especially in cold conditions. Whether you drive for work or personal use, winter is the ideal time to review your driving habits and ensure your vehicle is ready for the season.

Plan Your Journey

Allow more time for your journey than you normally would. Winter weather can cause delays, road closures and slower moving traffic. Planning ahead helps reduce stress and gives you time to adapt to conditions.

Check the weather forecast before you set off and stay aware of local advisories. If conditions worsen, consider whether the journey is essential. If you are running late, communicate with your workplace or colleagues rather than rushing.

Plan your route in advance, particularly if you are travelling to unfamiliar areas. Use a reliable sat-nav system or map, and have an alternative route in mind in case of road closures or diversions.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Cold weather can put additional strain on vehicles. A few basic checks can make a significant difference to your safety and comfort.

Tyres
Check tyre tread depth and pressure regularly. Tyres lose pressure in cold temperatures and worn tread reduces grip on wet or icy roads. If you regularly drive in rural or exposed areas, you may want to consider winter tyres.

Lights and Visibility
Make sure all lights are working, including headlights, brake lights and indicators. Clean snow, ice or dirt from lights before every journey to ensure you can see and be seen. Keep your windscreen and mirrors clear, and top up your screen wash with a winter-grade fluid to prevent freezing.

Battery
Cold weather can affect battery performance. If your battery is older or you have experienced slow starting, have it tested and replaced if needed.

Fuel
Avoid running your tank low during winter. Delays and diversions can occur unexpectedly, particularly during poor weather. Keeping at least half a tank of fuel ensures you are prepared.

Driving Techniques for Winter Conditions

Driving smoothly and steadily is key to safe winter travel. Rapid acceleration, hard braking and sharp steering can all cause loss of traction.

Braking
Increase your stopping distance and brake gently. In icy conditions, stopping distances can be up to ten times longer than in dry weather. Leave more space between you and the vehicle in front.

Acceleration
Accelerate gradually to maintain control and avoid wheel spin. If you feel the wheels slipping, ease off the accelerator until you regain grip.

Steering
On snow or ice, turn the steering wheel slowly and evenly. Sudden movements can cause skidding.

Speed
Adjust your speed for the conditions, even if it is below the legal limit. Speed limits are not targets, and slower speeds improve control in poor weather.

Hills
When driving uphill, keep a consistent speed and avoid changing gear unnecessarily. When driving downhill, use a low gear to help control speed rather than relying on the brakes.

Emergency Items to Keep in Your Car

Being prepared for the unexpected can help you stay safe if your journey is disrupted. Consider keeping the following items in your vehicle during winter:

• ice scraper and de-icer
• warm clothing and blankets
• bottled water and snacks
• torch and spare batteries
• fully charged mobile phone and power bank
• first aid kit
• warning triangle
• jump leads
• shovel (for snow)
• tow rope
• high-visibility vest

If you are travelling long distances, especially in remote areas, tell someone your route and estimated arrival time.

Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions

Wet weather and darker mornings can affect concentration. Avoid using your phone while driving and plan your route before setting off. If you need to adjust your sat-nav, pull over safely rather than doing it on the move.

Stay alert for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. Reduced visibility means it is harder to see people on the road during winter.

Check That Your Vehicle Is Roadworthy

The most important step in winter driving is ensuring your vehicle is roadworthy. If you have any doubts about the safety of your tyres, wheels, lights or brakes, ask a qualified mechanic to carry out a check. Winter is also a good time to book a service, particularly if your vehicle covers high mileage.

Winter driving requires preparation, patience and a focus on safety. Small actions such as planning your journey, checking your vehicle and adjusting your speed can make a significant difference to your safety and the safety of those around you.

The festive period brings celebrations, family gatherings and plenty of activity in homes and workplaces. It also introduces additional fire risks, particularly from lights, decorations, candles and increased cooking. Taking a few sensible precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of a fire and help ensure a safe Christmas for everyone.

The following guidance is adapted from official fire safety recommendations and is suitable for both domestic and workplace settings.

Christmas Lights and Electrical Safety

Ensure all Christmas lights meet the British Safety Standard and carry the correct kitemark.

Switch off and unplug lights before going to bed or leaving the property.

Avoid overloading electrical sockets. A socket calculator can help you check safe usage levels.

Candle Safety

Keep candles away from flammable materials, such as curtains, decorations and furnishings.

Never leave candles unattended when lit.

Place candles out of reach of children and pets.

Smoke Alarms

Test smoke alarms regularly throughout the festive season.

Never remove smoke alarm batteries, even temporarily.

Safe Cooking Practices

Do not leave cooking unattended, particularly when using multiple appliances or preparing large meals.

Avoid cooking while tired or under the influence of alcohol.

Decorations and Heating

Keep decorations away from heaters, fireplaces and lighting.

Do not attach decorations directly to heaters.

If you have an open fire, maintain a safe distance to prevent clothing from catching fire. A protective fire screen can reduce the risk further.

Planning and Escape Routes

Make sure escape routes are kept clear and easily accessible.

Consider how you would evacuate guests quickly and safely in the event of a fire.

Smoking Safety

Ensure all cigarettes are fully extinguished.

Provide appropriate ashtrays if you have visitors who smoke.

Fireworks and Outdoor Hazards

If using fireworks, store them in a secure and airtight container and follow all manufacturer safety instructions.

Keep fireworks away from heat sources and ignition risks.

Supporting Vulnerable People

Older people and those with mobility issues are at increased risk during a fire.

Check in on vulnerable relatives, neighbours and colleagues to ensure they are safe and aware of fire precautions.

If you need any support with Christmas fire safety or organising your Fire Risk Assessment, Fire Door Inspection, Compartmentation Survey or Fire Training for the New Year, call us on 01772 349589 or email us info@ezrasafetygroup.co.uk
